It’s important to take the time to enjoy your successes to build momentum for your future. This will not only allow space for a reprieve but also allows time for reflection.
Reflect on how far you’ve come; how much you are grateful for; what skills or knowledge you have acquired; and how you may have helped others in your journey.
When you stop to acknowledge an achievement, you begin to raise your standard for what is possible and begin to change your habits to sustain your success. Creating good habits always ends with some sort of reward (whether we know it or not). Rewards are the end goal of every habit.
Pre-set rewards to build momentum
You may even want to pre-set a reward for when you achieve a goal. Such as, when you lose 20 pounds, you will buy a new dress. We are motivated by the reward we believe we will receive for achieving a goal or completing a task. Rewards keep you excited.
This will help build your momentum, motivate you, and keep you optimistic in those times when you’re not feeling like doing what you need to do in order to achieve the goal. But remember that the reward only comes after the achievement. Never before.
Keep a running list of your achievements so that you can look back and see all that you have accomplished. You may want to add them to your list weekly, so you don’t forget them. Be kind to yourself and take time to celebrate each milestone. I add them to a master list during my weekly and monthly review of my goal status.
Reinforce your positive direction
Celebrating your success reinforces your positive direction and behavior that helped get you there. It will help propel you forward toward your future goals. Acknowledging your success will position you as a winner both in your mind and in other’s minds. It’s another tool to cultivate your success mindset.
Take the time to focus on all that you have accomplished and not on what is yet to be done. Dwell on it and savor it.
Tap into your gratitude for the achievement. Relish the feeling of accomplishment. Enjoy any perks or recognition that came along with achieving your goal.
Next time you’re struggling with success or self-confidence, you can use your success to motivate and encourage yourself. By recognizing your wins, you will help build your self-belief, self-confidence, and motivation to keep going. You will also shield yourself against negative events and help build resilience.
Think about the achievement and remember the feelings of success. Now imagine doing it again. This step can be very inspiring and help get you through a tough day. It will lead to a momentum for your future success.
